FARM TO FORK, MADE BY HAND
Our exceptional kitchen staff provides delicious, healthy and well-balanced meals with a focus on homemade and locally grown foods. Salads and vegetables are only hours from our gardens and greenhouses to our tables, and our breads are baked fresh and from scratch. We offer vegetarian and gluten-free options at every meal, enjoy fruit for most desserts, and keep sweets to a minimum. We do serve real maple syrup (straight from our sugar bush) with pancakes, French toast, and waffles.
TIME TO SAVOR THE GOOD FOOD WE EAT
With the exception of Wednesday homenights, NCS students eat their meals in the dining room. We sit family style at small tables of six, which include one staff member or 9th grade table head. Students take turns being waiters who retrieve seconds from the kitchen, clear away dishes, and sweep around the table after the meal. Our dining room practices teach appropriate table behavior and conversation and strengthen our sense of community. We instill an awareness of the origins of our food and an appreciation of those who prepare it. Our commitment to sustainable practices is evident in our kitchen and dining room, where nothing is wasted. We deliver remaining food scraps to our pigs or the compost pile, and we use cloth napkins to cut down on paper use.
MAKING SURE WE’RE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE
Every day after lunch, the school remains in the dining room for Council, a time for announcements, reminders, or acknowledgements of special achievements. Announcements can and are made by any member of the community, from the youngest to the oldest. It is a time when many students have their first experience speaking in front of a group, whether it is an unrehearsed request for volunteers to help with a job or a prepared message that
shares news from a class. 9th graders lead Council in the spring term.
