North Country School is located in the heart of the six-million acre Adirondack Park, of which two million acres are forest preserve. Our 220-acre campus includes extensive vegetable and flower gardens, a working farm, a maple sugaring operation, a six-trail ski hill, a thirty-six-route rock climbing crag, two riding rings, and over 3 miles of recreational trails. North Country School has long practiced a progressive, hands-on, and place-based education, taking full advantage of its campus, the High Peaks region, and the cultural and recreational opportunities offered in nearby Lake Placid.

We seek both part-time and full-time employees who like working in an amazing environment catering to summer campers using our own locally sourced foods. Employment for summer staff goes from mid-June through August. We are also seeking full time, year round staff. Our kitchen cooks have the opportunity to cook using their individual skills. Meals are prepared from scratch everyday in a family style setting. Wages are commensurate with experience and the benefits of working in our environment are outstanding.

We seek an independent maintenance technician who will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance work orders; coordinate maintenance tasks that enhance the aesthetics of the campus including landscaping, painting, general repairs; and assist with tasks required for maintaining our wastewater treatment plant.

The ideal candidate will have safely worked with hand tools, power tools, and machinery. Candidate must have a keen eye toward aesthetic improvement. Candidate must present a positive attitude, and enjoy working in a school community.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist wastewater treatment operator with required tasks
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks including painting, checks to fire extinguishers, bait mouse traps, snow removal
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks as assigned by a computerized maintenance management system
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and machinery including tractors and mowers
  • Perform landscape improvement to flower beds and other plantings

Located in the Adirondacks in Lake Placid, NY, Camp Treetops (CTT) is a residential summer camp for children ages 8-14. Our 220-acre campus (also home to North Country School) features a working farm, organic gardens, and is surrounded by vast wilderness, all of which provide hands-on opportunities for learning, work, and growth. Summer Farm and Garden Interns participate in daily farm and garden work, learning the basics of organic vegetable and flower growing, as well as animal husbandry. Interns also work with CTT counselors to offer campers farm-related activities ranging from vegetable harvests and animal care to cooking and garden-inspired games. Combining learning and work with opportunities for creativity and leadership, the Summer Farm and Garden Internship is a great fit for someone who is passionate about farming and education, enjoys physical work and spending time with children, and is looking for a deeply rewarding summer experience.

Requirements

Summer Farm and Gardens must:
• be available June through August
• be a minimum of 18 years old
• want to work at an educational institution with animal and plant production
• be able to work well with others and independently
• be able to provide instruction and supervise groups of children
• be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
• be able to communicate effectively with a diverse staff

Responsibilities

Throughout the summer, Summer Farm and Garden Interns will:
• assist with all aspects of greenhouse and field plant production systems
• seed, transplant, weed, and irrigate crops
• help with soil building (mulching and composting)
• lead morning and afternoon work crews
• assist with community work projects
• develop and coordinate farm and garden program activities
• prepare special meals from garden produce
• harvest produce and provide produce to kitchen and help produce storage prep
• help with plant/animal record keeping
• supervise daily barn chores and garden chores

Compensation

Summer Farm and Garden Interns receive a weekly stipend of $160, plus room and board
